The S25 Edge still confuses me

Evening edition due to a lot of shoveling!

The S25 Edge still confuses me
Back to basics with limited edition EDC items, a new phone, and a jacket.

Before I get into the gear and knick-knacks I've been toying with/daydreaming about this week, I want to shout out two pieces of content. The first is a video by Luke Miani summarizing how it feels to be covering tech products in this climate. I miss the days where tech was an escape from politics but those days are gone and I'm not big on pretending. The second is this quick but potent read from David Imel about the whole "stay in your lane" conversation that always comes up. Well worth the read!

🧣Snow Peak Quilted Insulation Jacket

If you're in a warm climate right now, I envy you. Yesterday the temperature dropped to real feel of 1 degree F (-17C) where I am in New York and I'm over it. I discovered that shoveling snow is the perfect time to daydream about cold-weather gear. So I promised myself that I'd keep an eye out for anything that would help me stay warm the next time I find myself in extreme cold. Starting with this insulated jacket from Snow Peak that I added to my watch list.

Snow Peak is a Japanese brand that makes all kinds of outdoor gear/apparel. Most of what they sell is too expensive to consider an impulse buy, but this one almost got me. If it wasn't for the fact that this particular jacket is sold out I would have already bought it. But as it stands I'm signed up for the notifications for whenever it comes back in stock.

If there is one piece of EDC gear that I think everyone should have it's a multitool. Whether it lives in your bag, on your desk, or your purse a good multitool can just make life so much simpler. On any given day I'm carrying a Leatherman Free P4, but the fact that it has not one, but two small blades means I can't always EDC it. We have some touchy knife laws in NYC, so the other multitool I usually carry is a Victorinox Cadet. The classic Swiss Army Knife (SAK) is one of those tools that no one blinks an eye at if you pull it out of your pocket unless you're at a concert venue or going through TSA.

Every year Victorinox releases a limited edition color way for some models and this year they announced a gorgeous Glacial Blue color for the Classic SD, Pioneer X, or the Evoke. Unfortunately, the Cadet hasn't received the special edition treatment in a few years, but the Classic SD and Pioneer X fill that same void depending on what you're looking for. I would steer clear from the Evoke if you live in a place with strict knife laws like I do, but if not then the Evoke is also a good choice. Victorinox always gets overlooked for some reason but it's an EDC goat for a reason.

📱 Samsung S25 Edge

One of the upsides of working with one of the biggest tech YouTubers in the world is that I get to try a lot of tech that I normally wouldn't. Last week, I decided to try out the S25 Edge and I have to say as much as I've been enjoying it, it is such a confusing phone. Not that it's hard to use or anything. One UI has come a long way and Android is in such a good place right now that coming back to a Samsung phone is a breath of fresh air. There is so much Samsung gets right and even though I still don't think the experience is as clean as a Pixel, the S25 phones are just so capable. This phone is fast, has a gorgeous screen, decent camera, Log video capabilities, and my favorite thing about Samsung phones: DeX. Plus, having a Samsung phone again is giving my Tab S11 a productivity power-up.

No, the thing that confuses me about the S25 Edge is still its price. Right now you can get an S25 Ultra straight from Samsung for less money than the Edge will cost you. That's bonkers. Sure, we're mere weeks away from the next Samsung event which usually happens in February at some point so you probably shouldn't buy one right now anyway, but still. I'm curious to see if we'll get an S26 Edge or if this was just a one-and-done device Samsung made purely to beat Apple to the thin-phone party. Either way, I'm loving being back in the Samsung ecosystem. I might need to rant about it soon.
