Sauna Watches and City Boy style

Cute can be cool too

It's been a real cutesy week for me.

It's a great time to be a New York sports fan. Bad time to be in New York seeing as real feel was -20°F over the weekend, but great time to be a sports fan. The Knicks beat the Celtics yesterday, Jose Alvarado is now on his hometown team, and Benito won the Super Bowl. The only negative of the last week is that it seems like Francisco Lindor from the Mets won't be playing in the World Baseball Classic next month. But other than that it's been a great week. Love me some sports ball baby!

🧖‍♂️ Casio SADOKEI

Casio is one of my most recommended watch brands but that’s mainly because they struck gold decades ago with affordable classics like the world timer or calculator watch. And I’m talking specifically about Casio here, not G-Shock which pumps out crazy looking watches every other day. Typically, Casio isn’t a brand that I get super excited for. But then I stumbled on the Casio SADOKEI. This comes from the Casio experimental labs and...I kind of love it?

The watch is specifically made to withstand heat up to 100°C (212°F) so that you can time your sauna session. It has a built-in 12-minute timer so you know when it’s time to leave and a stretchy orange band that pays homage to the locker keys you'd find at bathhouses, but it’s the design that speaks to me. It’s a bulbous black watch with playful orange accents and a beautifully simple and clean watch face. I love watches that have unique complications. The Brew watches come to mind which help you perfectly time an espresso shot. Or even the retro parking timer watches from the ‘70s which let you know when you had to put more money in the meter. This slots in right next to those in my head. And the fact that it’s from Casio means it will most likely be relatively affordable when it drops. Kudos to the design team that made this. It’s beautiful.

🌆 What the hell is a City boy?

I typically don’t recommend videos about fashion because while I do enjoy a nice pair of jeans or a comfortable sweater, they’ve always just been clothes to me. Something to wear so I don't look like a slob. But as is the case with anything in life, looking a little deeper reveals a new perspective on fashion. Reggie Casual broke down the 50 year history of a Japanese style called “City Boy” that I watched twice. It’s half style-explainer, half lecture on a different way to think about clothing and style.

I really enjoyed this view because it makes style less about buying into the newest trend or just going off “vibes” and more about the value of understanding the entire history of a style and citing your sources in the clothes you wear. He compares vintage clothing shops to open-source code and if that doesn’t tickle your interest than I don’t know what will. It’s definitely worth a watch if you’ve ever thought fashion wasn’t your thing (like me).

🧘 Posture Pal

One of the downsides of modern living is that I’m fairly certain everyone has terrible posture. I don’t know if as a generation of humans we all have weak cores or if we just can’t be bothered to sit up straight. I’ve seen ads for a piece of plastic that fixes your posture if you place it on your neck and I’ve also seen people recommend $1000 gaming chairs. I found a much cheaper (and cuter) solution.

Posture pals are just soft plushy animals that cling to the front of your desk. The point is to make sure your stomach is always pushed up against it which in turn gives you better posture. Does it actually work? Who the hell knows! But if I’m going to pay money for pseudoscience you best believe it’s going to be for something cute as hell. You could just get any plush animal you have lying around and try it out for yourself.
