Cozy Season is Upon Us

Journaling in Blender, flannels, and Lo-Fi hip hop.

Sweaters, Lo-fi, and Blender.

Cozy season is easily my favorite time of year in New York. This is when it’s cold enough to put on a thick sweater, drink a hot coffee, and do my best Jake from “Adventure Time” impression, but it isn’t so cold that your snot freezes. It’s the time when the fashion is cooler, the days are shorter, and the vibes are chiller. So this week I have yet another new software I want to learn, a shirt I'm drooling over, and the playlist that's been on repeat for three weeks and counting.

How I Journal as a Designer, in Japan

Every now and then the YouTube gods bless me with a video made by a super talented person that has almost no views. This week, it was this one by a channel simply named “Designer, In Japan” which has to be the most designer channel name ever made. It had a nicely designed thumbnail but it was the title that dragged me in. How does one's occupation change the journaling process? And what does that have to do with being in Japan? I’m so glad I clicked. This video blew me away.

It’s made entirely in Blender and details his experience trying to reinvent his journaling process. It’s only about five minutes long but I found myself rewinding, pausing, and replaying for at least half an hour. The level of detail in the artwork is insane. His process of experimenting with turning his travel photos into CGI artifacts made me download Blender to try it for myself. I’m always fascinated by how people remix and experiment with something as simple as journaling. Whether it’s a traditional pen and notebook, taking or drawing a picture every day, or even turning your travel photos into interactive experiences. It’s one of the things I plan to experiment myself with over the coming months.

Flinte and Tinder - Cabin Flannel

It can’t be cozy season without cozy clothing and the one piece I don’t yet have in my closet is a nice flannel. I typically get myself one or two really nice pieces of clothing a year which, after years of doing this, means that I now have hoodies, jeans, and jackets that I love wearing. Flannels have never been on my radar.

I’m not a big fan of the classic red and black checkered pattern, but this darker blue one with orange and green accents from Flint and Tinder is calling to me. It’s pretty damn expensive so I don’t know if I’ll actually pull the trigger on it, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for when sale season comes around. The only thing better than getting a really nice piece is getting it on sale.

Best of Nujabes

If you want the ultimate cozy playlist to listen to while making coffee, walking the dog, or even writing your weekly newsletter, then look no further. Nujabes is the Godfather of lo-fi hip hop and if you’re into anime or just vaguely aware of your hiphop music history then you already know who he is. I had no idea until about a month ago when my friend Tristan put me on. We were talking about Ghost of Yotei (of course) when he mentioned how the Watanabe mode needed some more Nujabes.

I haven’t seen the anime Samurai Champloo (yet) which is apparently where most people know him from as he did a lot of the soundtrack, so I was unfamiliar with his game. But after listening to this playlist nonstop over the last few weeks I finally decided to Google him and found out that he unfortunately passed away in a car accident in 2010. So this playlist of his best music feels even more like a time capsule of his genius. Nujabes is the OG vibe that all modern vibes are derived from and so far it has been the soundtrack of my life this fall.
