3 things to try this year

A game, a comic, and a multitool walk into a bar.

It's going to be a good year!

It feels like the year just started but somehow we're halfway done with January already. So I figured I'd take stock. I marked down some important dates on my calendar, I started reading what I couldn't get to last year, and the "2016 is back" trend got me rethinking my EDC. I guess you could say it was a typical weekend.

🚶 Big Walk

You probably think Grand Theft Auto 6 is the most anticipated game of 2026, but you're wrong. It's Big Walk. I'm joking (kind of). I just have no faith that GTA 6 won't get delayed again. So instead, the game I'm hyping myself up for is Big Walk. It's a co-op game that requires you and your teammates to go on..well, a big walk. From what I can tell it seems to be a weird cross between something like It Takes Two and a virtual hiking simulator.

You play as these colorful bug people and as you hike through different terrains with your group you encounter different puzzles that require teamwork to solve. It also makes clever use of proximity chat so teammates that are close will sound better/louder than those that are far away. I love games with a quirky game mechanic so I can't wait to see what this game is like when it drops at some point this year.

🦇 Absolute Batman

Batman is one of those superheroes that I've always liked but have never been super into, unless you count Batman Beyond but I think that show counts as something else. I've always been more of a Marvel person (X-Men specifically) so I've been putting off reading the new Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder for damn near a year now. But last week I finally took the time to sit down and read the first 10ish issues and ho-ly crap. What a great series.

It takes the classic Batman characters and puts them in an alternate (more gruesome) storyline where Bruce Wayne actually kills people and his parents weren't murdered in some back alley stick up. The series starts off with Batman straight up unaliving white supremacists in ways that literally made me go 😮. It's dope. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a unique spin on the classic story and I can't wait to see where the series goes this year.

🔧 Titanium Pocket Tool

This last one is kind of cheating, but the "2026 is the new 2016" trend had me looking back at my old pictures on Instagram and reminiscing. First off, I can't believe we even had Instagram 10 years ago! Can you imagine where we'd all be if Instagram hasn't made us all want to be photographers? Anyway, one of the pictures that I found was what I consider to be my perfect EDC, or as close to perfect as I've ever gotten. The key to this slim carry was the tiny Titanium Pocket Tool (TPT) which fit snugly in my left pocket alongside my wallet and flashlight.

The TPT is a small multitool that combines a box cutter with a flathead screwdriver, a bottle opener, a pry bar, and a bunch of wrench sizes into something that can easily fit in your pocket. The problem with having something so slim and small though is that it's easy to lose. Therefore, I have no idea where I put mine. It must've fallen out or been left in a bag I got rid of but it was such a functional little tool that I'm tempted to just pick one up again. The mechanism for deploying the blade does take some getting used to since it requires using some tension and force, but there's also the TPT Slide if you don't feel like learning a new thing. I'll probably stick with the original though.
